Remote Peering is a way of interconnecting networks where two or more networks connect to an Internet Exchange Point (IXP) or a peering point through the use of a remote peering service provider to establish the connection.

4. What is the difference between Remote Peering and Direct Peering?

There are four key differences between Remote Peering and Direct Peering:

  1. Physical presence: Remote Peering allows businesses to connect to an Internet Exchange Point (IXP) without a physical presence, as connections are established through the Remote Peering provider. In contrast, Direct Peering necessitates a physical presence at the IXP.
  2. Hardware deployment: Remote Peering does not require the deployment of physical hardware at the IXP, while businesses opting for Direct Peering must invest in hardware installation, cover colocation and utility fees at each IXP, and manage ongoing maintenance charges.
  3. Interconnection port: Remote Peering enables businesses to access multiple IXPs using a single interconnection port and cross-connect to the service port. In contrast, Direct Peering requires a separate physical port and cross-connect for each IXP the network wishes to peer with.
  4. Vendor management: Remote Peering simplifies the management of multiple IXP relationships, which typically involve varying Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and contracts that businesses must handle when adopting traditional Direct Peering.
